Let us understand with an example for more clarity. Just think about the time when there was no internet, how was the mail sent? At that time people used to write the mail on paper and put it in an envelope on which the address was written. And went to the post office and put that envelope in the mail box. After that a postman would take that mail out of the mail-box and deliver it to the address written on it.
But when the internet came into existence, instead of writing it on paper, people started writing it in electronic devices like smartphones, computers, laptops etc. and instead of sending it by postman, started sending it with the help of internet.
This is where the concept of email came from. Email means, “A mail which is written in electronic devices like smartphone, computer, laptop etc.. and sent with the help of internet.”
Now the question comes that earlier when there was no internet then people used to write mail and postman used to transfer that mail from one address to another or from one place to another but when internet came then people started writing emails. So now who is doing the work of transferring this email from one place to another?
From here Gmail plays its role. With the advent of the Internet, Gmail is acting like a postman. That is, “Gmail is a product of Google acting like a postman, which works to transfer email from one address to another or from one place to another.”
Meaning of the story, earlier we used to write the mail and give it to the postman at the post office and the postman would deliver it to the correct address. Similarly, today we write an email and give it to Gmail and Gmail delivers it to the correct address.
So with the help of this example you understood the main difference between email and Gmail that email is a kind of mail which we write on electronic devices. And Gmail is like a postman i.e. transfers the email from one address to another or from one place to another.
